On the Beach

We explored San Diego's Ocean side today. Slept in and then headed for Coronado Beach, which is right near downtown SD but on its own little island. Lots of people (seemed like mostly locals) but very few actually in the 64 degree water. Brrr!

Beautiful scenery from the beach. Point Loma lighthouse is to the north and Coronado stretches way to the south.

We checked out the Hotel del Coronado which dates from the 1880's. Some Like It Hot was filmed here and there are old pictures of Marilyn and the other stars. Rooms start at just $500 (one bed, no beach view) but you can get a Suite with a view for under $2500! We'll save that for the next California trip!

Next we drove to Old Town San Diego, which is on the site of the original Spanish mission and Presidio. Now it's mostly a tourist hangoout, but there are some museums and exhibits about the first exploters (1770's) that were interesting.

I had to park the Charger with the tires turned to the curb.

Not something we'd ever do in Savannah.
We ate in the Old Town Mexican Cafe, where women were making corn and flour tortillas by hand.

We got a basket of them and some really good guacamole to go with our meals, which were great.

After that we headed for Point Loma, which sticks way out into SD Bay and has a lighthouse at the tip. Unfortunately they close at 5pm and we got there too late. We'll try again tomorrow or Friday. We did get to see some great views of the city below

and the National Cemetery (a lot like Arlington). Most of the graves seem to be from the Vietnam era with rows and rows of late 60's headstones.

We headed back to town and went by Balboa Park where the kids acted less than their ages.

We called it a night a little later. Tomorrow we are signed up for a kayak tour of caves in La Jolla.
